L’oeuvre de Gilles Archambault propose une réflexion approfondie sur la paternité. Y défilent trois générations : les grands-pères autoritaires et méprisants, les pères inquiets et rongés par la culpabilité, les fils et les filles qui les condamnent sans appel. C’est surtout la double expérience de la génération du milieu — à la fois fils et pères — qui retient le romancier. L’auteure du présent article examine les constantes du portrait de la paternité qui se dégage de l’ensemble de l’oeuvre, mais aussi son évolution au fil des décennies.

Abstract

The work of Gilles Archambault offers a sustained reflection on fatherhood. It describes three generations of men: authoritarian and contemptuous grandfathers, worried and guilt-ridden fathers, and sons and daughters by whom they are relentlessly judged. The novelist pays most attention to the twofold experience of the middle generation consisting of those who are both fathers and sons. The author of this article examines the constants in the portrait of fatherhood that emerges from Archambault’s work as a whole, while also showing how the picture has changed over the decades.
