Dans leurs textes respectifs, Gérard Bessette et Jacques Ferron se transforment réciproquement en personnages littéraires. Cet article retrace la formation et l'évolution des images du Bessette ferronnien et du Ferron bessettien. De 1964 à 1985, ces images se modifient au gré des aléas des appréciations esthétiques, idéologiques et méthodologiques de chacun de ces deux écrivains et critiques à l'égard de la production de l'autre, et se complexifient d'une relation d'amitié fluctuante qui glisse vers une hostilité ouverte avant d'aboutir à plus de modération. Ces images réciproques hantent les deux oeuvres et semblent, dans le cas de Ferron, jouer un rôle important dans le processus même de la création.

In their respective writings, Gérard Bessette and Jacques Ferron have made each other into literary characters. This article traces the appearance and evolution of Ferron's Bessette and Bessette's Ferron. From 1964 to 1985, the two images changed as the two writer/critics' aesthetic, ideological and methodological views on each other's production evolved; the images were also made more complex through the effects of a fluctuating friendship which moved towards overt hostility before reaching greater moderation. The images haunt the works of both writers and in Ferron's case, seem to play a major role in the creative process itself.
