Des bienfaits de la nature aux services écosystémiques Éléments pour l’histoire et l’interprétation d’une idée écologique

Résumé

Cet article replace le concept montant de « service écosystémique » (SE) dans l’histoire occidentale, en mettant en évidence les permanences, oppositions et ruptures qui ont accompagné la genèse de ce concept ou de ses équivalents anciens. Une nature bienveillante, l’existence de « bienfaits », « services » et « utilités » furent des idées régulièrement mises en avant, mais pour des raisons différentes d’aujourd’hui, depuis les philosophes de l’Antiquité, les naturalistes de l’Ancien Régime, les poètes romantiques, les ingénieurs à la recherche de crédits ou de lois incitatives pour le reboisement, et désormais, l’écologie scientifique. L’étude s’appuie sur le cas de la forêt, le plus évoqué en parlant de SE. La discussion aborde certaines propriétés de ce concept, que son histoire peut expliquer, notamment ses ambigüités, ses mutations et sa dissymétrie, mais aussi les contradictions qui naissent de son usage dans des dispositifs locaux.

Abstract

This article replaces the rising concept of "ecosystem service" (ES) in the western history, by bringing to light the continuities, the oppositions and the breaks which accompanied the genesis of this concept or its former equivalents. A “friendly nature”, the existence of "benefits", "the services" and "the utilities" were ideas regularly emphasised, but for different reasons, for the philosophers of the Antiquity, the naturalists of the Ancien Régime, the romantic poets, the engineers in search of credits or of incentive laws for the afforestation, and henceforth, the scientific ecology. The study leans on the case of the forest, the most evoked ecosystem regarding ES. Some properties of this concept, that may be due to its history, are discussed: its ambiguities, its mutations and its asymmetry, but also the contradictions that arise from its practical use in local designs.
