How urban was industrial activity in 1871, when only one in five Canadians lived in incorporated cities, towns or villages? This paper explores central Canada's urban-industrial system at a time of transition in industrial technology, business organization and work discipline. Based on analysis of the manuscript schedules of the First Census of Canada made machine-readable by the CANIND71 project, the article has three main parts. First, the whole urban-industrial system is described, using a classification that combines measures of the significance of industrial work in each place and of specialization in particular sectors with the population size of urban centres. Next, a typology of industrial workplaces is presented, combining measures of the number of workers with the extent to which non-manual power was used in the industrial process. Patterns of industry within urban places (especially Trois-Rivières and Guelph) are examined in order to assess factors such as rail and water transport, types of power, scale of process and size of output, and types of workplace and workforce. The authors propose questions and directions for further research on industry in Canada's urban centres.

In 1991, a research team centred at Concordia University undertook a contract for the city of Montreal. The task was to prepare an inventory of all industrial establishments that had been in existence in the city between the 1820s and 1950. One of the most important contributions of the project was to make its inventory of industrial firms available for spatial display. Computer generated maps of a large set of industrial categories are available to assist research into the industrialisation process in Canada's largest and most diverse manufacturing city of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This paper employs the data and the maps of one industrial group (food and beverage), and all industries to describe some of the important spatial processes occurring in Montreal's industrialisation.

Une étude du patrimoine industriel de Montréal a été complétée en 1991 par une équipe de recherche à l’université Concordia. Cette recherche avait comme but la préparation d’un inventaire de toutes les entreprises industrielles à Montréal depuis 1825, jusqu’à 1950. Un aspect important de la recherche est la possibilité de reproduire, par la cartographie automatique, des cartes de la répartition géographique des entreprises manufacturières; ce qui contribue à la meilleure compréhension de l’évolution industrielle de Montréal du XIX^e et au début du XX^e siècles. Des cartes de l’ensemble des industries et d’un secteur (les aliments et boissons) sont présentées pour démontrer quelques éléments du processus d’industrialisation de la ville la plus importante au Canada.

The literature on cities simplifies both industrial structure and location patterns of manufacturing in nineteenth-century urban areas, and it conceives of change narrowly in terms of innovations in transportation technology at or after the turn of the century. There are many reasons for rejecting this orthodoxy. Empirical research on Toronto, and other cities, recognizes industries of different scale, capital intensity, labour characteristics, and input-output linkages in the early 1880s. Location patterns for different industries varied from highly centralized ones to those characterized by a great dispersion of factories. There was, however, no straightforward relationship between scale and capital intensity on one hand and location on the other.

Les publications sur les villes réduisent à leur plus simple expression la structure industrielle et les schémas de localisation des entreprises manufacturières des zones urbaines du dix-neuvième siècle; la seule notion de changement qu’on y trouve se limite exclusivement aux innovations sur le plan de la technologie des transports au tournant du siècle ou par la suite. On peut rejeter cette orthodoxie pour diverses raisons. This paper examines how forces of fragmentation within the Maritimes contribute a partial but important explanation of the urban-industrial collapse that marked the region in the early 20th century. Specifically, weaknesses that affected the spatial strategies of the vertically-integrated industrial giant, the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Company, provide evidence of limited interaction within the Maritime urban system. Profits from exporting staples, pig iron, and steel products to foreign and national markets, although initially aided by tidewater location and control over all phases of production, were not sufficient to overcome, in the long-run, such forces of fragmentation as dispersed and limited regional markets, increased costs of producing poor quality resources, or the minimal presence of external economies. With "Scotia's" eventual demise, towns like Sydney Mines, Trenton, and New Glasgow suffered economic and population decline.

Cet article montre comment les forces de fragmentation à l’intérieur des Provinces maritimes offrent une explication partielle, mais importante, de l’effondrement urbain-industriel qui marquait la région au début du vingtième siècle.
