La théologie universitaire et son rapport avec l’Église : fin ou renouveau du contrat entre l’Église et l’université ?

Résumé

Récemment, la question de la double inscription institutionnelle de la théologie, à la fois dans l’espace universitaire et dans l’espace ecclésial, a été soulevée dans divers milieux. Au Québec, en même temps que se faisait le débat sur l’enseignement de la religion à l’école et que prenait place la réforme visant à déconfessionnaliser le système public d’éducation, on a assisté à une remise en question d’une formation théologique donnée à l’université, autant de la part d’acteurs ecclésiaux que d’acteurs sociaux. Le travail théologique est évidemment possible en dehors de l’institution universitaire, mais la théologie peut trouver dans l’université l’un de ses lieux majeurs de production et d’expression, mettant en dialogue la foi et la raison. Pour cela, l’Église doit accepter de nouvelles formes d’association avec l’université. Il faut repenser le «contrat» entre l’Église, l’université et l’État.

Abstract

Scholars have recently drawn attention to the fact that academic theology finds itself in a sort of double bind, owing as it does allegiance both to the university and to the church. In Quebec, at the same time as the confessional affiliation of school boards was being eliminated and debates were being held about the place of religion in public schools, certain churchmen and -women, as well as members of the larger society, began to question whether or not theological education ought to be offered on university campuses. While theological tasks can clearly be pursued beyond the confines of academic institutions, the university offers a unique venue within which theology has been able to express itself and to produce works which bring faith and reason into dialogue. For this reason, it is imperative that the church seek out new forms of association with the university. It is time to rethink the «contract» between the church, the university and the state.
