Résumé
Le tourisme est un agent important de transformation des manifestations et des productions culturelles locales. Dans le cas de l’artisanat, qui établit une relation entre l’espace, les gens et les modes de vie traditionnels, la consommation touristique peut conduire à une marchandisation de la culture. Cette marchandisation a tendance à imposer des changements dans la forme, les matières premières, les techniques de production, les outils du métier et aussi dans le sens et la valeur de la culture locale. Toutefois, très peu d’études empiriques ont été réalisées dans l’objectif de définir plus précisément les impacts du tourisme dans le contexte culturel latino-américain. Dans une perspective anthropologique, notre recherche visait à identifier ces changements dans une production artisanale, en lien avec sa marchandisation dans le tourisme. Pour ce faire, nous avons analysé des pièces d’artisanat indigène du sud du Costa Rica, notamment le « masque Boruca ». Des entretiens approfondis ont révélé que les masques et les métiers traditionnels ont été modifiés du fait de leur incorporation dans la consommation touristique ; cette modification est principalement fondée sur l’agrégation d’éléments décoratifs et représentatifs de la biodiversité du Costa Rica, importants pour les touristes mais inexistants dans la tradition d’origine. Cependant, les artisans fabriquent aussi des masques traditionnellement développés pour leurs propres intérêts culturels. Cela suggère que la transformation de la culture n’est pas nécessairement le résultat d’un intérêt unidirectionnel du tourisme, mais plutôt une stratégie de survie économique et culturelle.
