D’une trompeuse absence : « tenter » et « tentation » dans l’oeuvre de Pascal On a misleading absence: Tempting and temptation in the works of Pascal

Résumé

Le lexique de la tentation brille, dans l’oeuvre de Pascal, par sa quasi-absence. Devons-nous pour autant conclure à l’absence de la chose ? Si le mot tentation ne suffit sans doute pas à dire la vie du pécheur pour Pascal, sa discrétion impose en fait une assez grande spécification permettant de préciser les dimensions de la tentation qui importe le plus à l’oeuvre pascalienne. C’est ce que l’article examine en insistant d’abord sur la force attractive d’une tentation infinie, puis sur l’épreuve qu’elle constitue et enfin sur l’ignorance du retrait de Dieu dont elle témoigne. Plus que la lutte contre les tentations, comptent ainsi pour Pascal le dynamisme antithétique du péché et de la grâce, la noirceur insondable du mal et, plus que tout, son opposition à la recherche sincère de Dieu qui définit, dans une partie des Pensées, un projet bien plus consolateur et lumineux que la tradition ne l’a dit.

Abstract

The language of temptation, in Pascal’s work, is conspicuous for its quasi-absence. Should we therefore conclude in the absence of the thing itself? If, for Pascal, the word temptation is doubtless insufficient when speaking about the life of the sinner, the rarity of the word goes in fact hand in hand with a rather specific definition that the article intends to clarify. The present article explores this issue by examining first, the alluring strength of an infinite temptation; second, the test that this constitutes; and finally, the ignorance of God’s withdrawal that it reveals. Thus, more than the battle against temptation, what counts for Pascal is the antithetical dynamism of sin and grace, the unfathomable darkness of evil and, above all, its opposition to the sincere search for God. All of this describes, in part of the Pensées, a project far more consoling and luminous than that handed down in tradition.
