Résumé
Cet article est consacré à Shiva Naipaul, essayiste, romancier originaire de l’Inde, né à Trinidad, écrivain-voyageur qui a parcouru le monde de l’Afrique à l’Australie, de la Guyane au Sri Lanka. Nous proposons de mettre en écho son histoire personnelle et son travail d’écrivain, qui l’oblige précisément, comme il le disait lui-même, à se « réinventer chaque jour ». Cette invention quotidienne de soi est source d’une lucidité douloureuse, mais libératrice, propre à favoriser la compréhension des bouleversements du monde postcolonial. Son art de l’investigation, intimement lié à sa quête personnelle, se caractérise par une grande distance, une volonté de mise en perspective et une méfiance vis-à-vis des abstractions dangereuses, le « prêt-à-penser », mais aussi par un engagement personnel, quitte à se mettre en danger lui-même. L’auteur ouvre ainsi une voie singulière entre littérature, journalisme et analyse anthropologique.
Abstract
This article focuses on Shiva Naipaul, Indian essayist and novelist born in Trinidad, a travel writer who journeyed from Africa to Australia, Guyana to Sri Lanka. We draw direct parallels between his writings and personal experience, which, in his own words, obliged him “to reinvent myself each day.” This everyday reinvention of self is a source of painful yet liberating clearsightedness, suitable for encouraging an understanding of the upheavals in the post-colonial world. Naipaul’s investigative art, intimately linked to his personal quest, is characterized by great distance, a determination to view matters in perspective and a deep suspicion of dangerous abstractions, that is, pre-conceived ideas. It is also characterized by personal commitment, regardless if this meant putting himself in danger. Shiva Naipaul opens an unusual path between literature, journalism and anthropological analysis.
