Résumé
Cet article, qui prend appui sur le premier roman de Jean Echenoz, Le méridien de Greenwich, s’intéresse particulièrement au statut du chercheur scientifique et à la place qu’il occupe dans le champ social. Après avoir abordé cette question dans une perspective d’abord sociologique, l’article examinera quelques effets particuliers de « l’imaginaire de la science », dans la société occidentale, qui se manifestent dans le roman alors que le pouvoir intellectuel d’un scientifique est en jeu.
Abstract
This article is based on Jean Echenoz’s first novel, Le méridien de Greenwich (1979), and focuses on the status of the scientific researcher and his/her place in the social domain. The article first examines this issue from a sociological perspective, then examines a few particular effects of “science fiction” in Occidental society, effects manifested in the novel while the intellectual power of a scientist is at stake.
