Abstract
This paper examines the resistance tactics of early career academics (ECA) with a particular focus on the role of race, gender, and the use of space in navigating academia. Drawing on 50 in-depth interviews with ECAs from five Belgian Dutch-speaking universities, we merge James Scott’s work on everyday resistance with the work of post-colonial scholar Nirmal Puwar on white and racialized women as ‘space invaders’ disrupting normative space. We identify three manifestations of everyday resistance-tactics: 1) innerspace-tactics occur inside the work-space breaking and blurring the symbolic boundaries of who the legitimate occupant can be; 2) outerspace-tactics develop spaces outside the workspace aiming to become the ‘unencumbered’ academic crossing boundaries by playing the game of merit; and 3) inner-outerspace blend tactics establish counter-spaces inside the dominant work-space developing new exclusionary boundaries on their own terms to simulate a space of academic support. We conclude by extending Puwar’s concept of space invaders to space interpreters, highlighting women ECAs’ active boundary work in developing an anti-racist-sexist academic organization.
