La validité du choix du facteur «géographique» comme principe d'organisation des services de soins psychiatriques d'urgence est étudiée à partir d'une analyse de la littérature scientifique d'une part et d'une analyse des données montréalaises d'autre part. Les auteurs ne s'entendant pas sur l'importance à accorder au facteur géographique de la distance entre le consommateur et les services fournis, cette recherche tente de vérifier deux hypothèses : 1) il y a une réponse structurée à l'offre des services d'urgence psychiatrique des hôpitaux de Montréal et 2) la répartition géographique des usagers qui se présentent à ces services est liée à trois variables dont la plus importante est la distance spatiale entre le patient et la ressource d'urgence la plus proche. L'étude tend à confirmer ces deux hypothèses.

SUMMARY

The validity of using a «geographic» criterion as the organizing principle for the provision of emergency psychiatric services is examined both from the standpoint of the scientific literature on the subject and through a quantitative analysis of Montreal - based data. Given the lack of agreement as to the relative importance of distance between the consumer and the supply of services, the analysis attempts to test two hypotheses : 1) that there is a spatially structured response to the supply of emergency psychiatric services provided by Montreal hospitals and 2) the geographical distribution of the users of these services is linked to three variables of which the most important is the spatial distance between the patient and the closest emergency services. The study tends to confirm both hypotheses.
