Résumé
Cet article traite du problème posé par les jeunes adultes actuellement hospitalisés en psychiatrie. Les recherches scientifiques citées et commentées par l'auteur révèlent comment le fossé des générations se manifeste dans les unités psychiatriques, notamment par un nombre élevé de sorties contre ou sans avis médical chez les jeunes patients de 18 à 27 ans. Situés dans la zone d'âge des adultes sans être reconnus comme tels, n'ayant plus l'accès aux services pour adolescents, les jeunes adultes vivent de multiples problèmes de communication dans un système mal adapté à leurs besoins. De plus, s'ils mènent une vie sociale marginale, leurs risques d'hospitalisations et d'institutionnalisation deviennent encore plus grands. L'auteur conclut à la nécessité de reconnaître l'existence et l'importance de ce problème, et de modifier d'abord certaines conditions institutionnelles pour que divers moyens thérapeutiques puissent être utilisés avec moins de risques d'échecs.
SUMMARY
This article deals with the problem posed by young adults currently hospitalized in psychiatry. Scientific research, cited and commented upon by the author, reveals the way in which the generation gap manifests itself on psychiatric wards, notably by a high frequency of departures, against or without medical advice, among young patients from 18 to 27 years of age. Situated within the age limits of adulthood, without the incumbent recognition, no longer eligible for adolescent services, young adults are confronted with multiple communication problems in a system poorly adapted to their needs. In addition, if they lead a marginal social life, the risk of hospitalization and institutionalization are increased. The author concludes that it is necessary to recognize the existence and importance of this problem, and to modify, first of all, certain institutional conditions to permit use of the various therapeutic approaches with less risk of failure.
