The Central Experimental Farm and the horticultural history collections of Faith Fyles and Isabella Preston

Abstract

This article highlights the artifactual and archival collections related to Canadian horticulturalist Isabella Preston and botanist-artist Faith Fyles, who both pursued careers at the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa in the early twentieth century. These collections, held at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington, Ontario and the Ingenium collection in Ottawa, provide materials for researchers interested in women as producers of horticultural knowledge in Canadian agriculture.

Résumé

Cet article met en lumière les collections d’artefacts et d’archives liées à l’horticultrice canadienne Isabella Preston et à l’artiste botaniste Faith Fyles, qui ont toutes deux fait carrière à la Ferme expérimentale centrale d’Ottawa au début du vingtième siècle. Ces collections, conservées aux Jardins botaniques royaux à Burlington (Ontario) et à la collection Ingenium à Ottawa, constituent des sources pour les chercheurs qui s’intéressent aux femmes en tant que productrices de connaissances horticoles dans l’agriculture canadienne.
