Radio Radio à Montréal : « la right side of the wrong »

Résumé

Le présent article étudie les chansons du groupe rap d’origine acadienne Radio Radio et leur réception au Québec. Il s’intéresse au rôle que ce groupe a joué dans l’évolution du débat québécois sur la langue, et fait l’hypothèse qu’un déplacement en cours dans les représentations linguistiques affecte le rapport de force entre le Québec et l’Acadie. Ce déplacement, Radio Radio y a participé et en a tiré profit. De manière performative, le groupe a mis en place au fil de ses albums une représentation festive du contact entre le français et l’anglais, ce qui lui a permis de se dégager de l’association entre contact des langues et disparition collective. Bien que ce soit le Québec qui définisse habituellement la norme artistique et culturelle, Radio Radio a donc pu influencer cette norme. Le groupe a pris place au coeur de la scène musicale québécoise et invité son auditoire à s’approprier un nouveau rapport aux langues. Entre exotisme et identification, le Québec s’est familiarisé avec ses usages linguistiques, de même qu’avec les nouvelles connotations que Radio Radio y insufflait. Qu’elles suscitent l’enthousiasme ou la réprobation, ces nouvelles connotations font désormais partie du discours québécois sur la langue.

Abstract

The following article focusses on the songs of Montreal-based Acadian hip hop group Radio Radio, as well as on how they are received in Québec. It investigates Radio Radio’s contribution to the evolution of the Québec language debate. The article hypothesizes that an ongoing shift in language ideology is changing the power dynamics between Québec and Acadie, unsettling the established hierarchy which makes Québec the definer of the artistic and cultural norm that prevails for both collectivities. Radio Radio has taken advantage of, and contributed to this shift. From one album to the next, the group has performatively imposed a festive take on language contact that competes with the preexisting view of it as inherently deadly for francophone minorities. As its presence increased on the Québec music scene, so did new connotations for language mixing. These new connotations have been met at times with enthusiasm and at times with disapproval; but in both cases, they are now part of Québec’s discourse on language.
