Le discours amoureux selon Roland Barthes

Résumé

À la fin de sa vie, Barthes décide de s’attaquer à la tradition prestigieuse et intimidante de l’amour : pendant deux ans, il y consacre un séminaire à l’École pratique des hautes études dont il a tiré un livre à succès Fragments d’un discours amoureux (1977), séminaire dont on a publié l’intégralité des notes en 2007. Qu’est-ce que son travail imposant apporte à la compréhension de ce sentiment et à la quantité massive de théories accumulées au cours des siècles sur le sujet? Quand on compare la richesse du séminaire au produit final, on constate un appauvrissement conséquent et même des distorsions importantes du concept analysé. Cet article tente de faire ressortir quelques exemples de figures que le critique a développées au cours du séminaire, mais finalement rejetées ou modifiées dans les Fragments. Que révèlent les choix fondamentaux qu’il a effectués pour élaborer son Discours amoureux? Quelles difficultés a-t-il rencontrées? Quelle conception de l’amour s’en dégage en bout de piste et comment s’insère-t-elle dans son profil intellectuel d’ensemble? Telles sont les questions auxquelles cette brève étude critique se propose de répondre.

Abstract

At the end of his life, Barthes decides to address a very prestigious and intimidating topic : love. For two years he devoted a seminar on it in Paris and published a successful book A Lover’s Discourse : Fragments (1977). Barthes’ extensive notes for his course were published in 2007. What light does this intensive work bring to the understanding of that feeling, after it has been studied over the centuries in a massive number of theories? When we compare the richness of the seminar to the final product as a book, we can see a substantial impoverishment and even significant distortions of the analyzed concept. This article attempts to bring out a few examples of figures that the scholar developed in the seminar, but ultimately rejected or modified in the Fragments. What do the fundamental choices he made to craft his final lover’s discourse reveal? What difficulties did he encounter? What conception of love emerges from the process and how does it fit into his global intellectual profile? These are the questions that this critical study sets out to answer.
