Résumé
Individuellement, l’aptitude cognitive générale, la personnalité et les préférences d’apprentissage prédisent la performance académique. Or, l’interaction entre ces variables dans la prédiction de la performance demeure méconnue. Selon Furnham (1995), les préférences d’apprentissage modèreraient la relation entre l’aptitude cognitive générale et la performance, ainsi qu’entre la personnalité et la performance. L’objectif de cette étude consiste à tester empiriquement cette idée. Pour ce faire, les résultats de 192 étudiant⋅e⋅s universitaires à divers tests (c’est-à-dire Wonderlic [1992], NEO PI-3 [2010] et l’inventaire des styles d’apprentissage de Kolb [2005]) ont été mis en lien avec des mesures de performance académique. Les résultats suggèrent que seule la préférence pour l’expérimentation active modèrerait la relation entre le facteur Conscience et la performance académique. Plus précisément, les étudiant⋅e⋅s consciencieux⋅euses obtiendraient de meilleurs résultats à l’examen final lorsqu’ils ou elles ont une préférence pour l’apprentissage par expérimentation active. Les implications théoriques (pour le modèle de Furnham) et empiriques seront discutées.

Abstract
Individually, general cognitive ability, personality, and learning preferences predict academic performance. However, the way these variables interact with one another in the prediction of performance remains unknown. According to Furnham, learning preferences could moderate the relationship between general cognitive ability and academic performance and the relationship between personality and academic performance. The purpose of this study is to empirically test this proposition. To do so, the results of 192 university students at several questionnaires (Wonderlic Test for personnel, NEO PI-3, Kolb’s Learning Style Inventory) have been linked to different performance measures. Results suggest that only the preference for active experiment would moderate the relationship between conscientiousness and academic performance.
In other words, conscientious students obtain better scores at the final examination when they prefer to learn by active experimentation. The implications for Furnham’s model as well as empirical fallouts from this study will be discussed.

Individualmente, la aptitud cognitiva general, la personalidad y las preferencias de aprendizaje predicen los resultados académicos. Sin embargo, la interacción entre estas variables en la predicción de los resultados sigue siendo desconocida. Según Furnham, las preferencias de aprendizaje moderarían la relación entre la aptitud cognitiva general y los resultados, así como entre la personalidad y los resultados. El objetivo de este estudio consiste en validar empíricamente esta idea. Para ello, se relacionaron los resultados de 192 estudiantes universitarios a diversos tests (por ejemplo, Wonderlic, NEO PI-3 y el inventario de estilos de aprendizaje de Kolb) con las medidas de resultados académicos. Nuestros resultados sugieren que sólo la preferencia por la experimentación activa moderaría la relación entre el factor Consciencia y los resultados académicos. De manera más precisa, los estudiantes más concienzudos tendrían mejores resultados en el examen final cuando éstos tienen una preferencia por el aprendizaje por experimentación activa. Se discuten también las implicaciones teóricas y empíricas para el modelo de Furnham.
