Penser et réaliser « ensemble » une transformation architecturale favorable à la santé durable des résidents et des travailleurs en centre d’hébergement de longue durée Collaborating in the design and implementation of an architectural transformation that promotes the sustainable health of residents and workers in long-term care centres

Résumé

La vétusté des centres de soins de longue durée (CHSLD) au Québec et d’autres enjeux organisationnels les concernant nécessitent la réalisation de certaines transformations, entre autres de nature architecturale, dont les processus sont peu documentés. Nous présentons ici un des volets d’une recherche-action commencée en 2020, en plein coeur de la pandémie de COVID-19, durant laquelle nous avons accompagné le processus de rénovation de deux unités spécialisées d’un CHSLD de la région de Québec destinées à des personnes âgées en forte perte d’autonomie et présentant des troubles cognitifs. L’article traite de cette intervention dont sont nés de nouveaux habitats et qui visait à offrir un environnement bâti favorable à la santé des travailleurs et des résidents. Nous décrivons l’origine de la recherche-action et les étapes de l’intervention ainsi que les enjeux de coconstruction soulevés à chacune de ses étapes. Les facteurs facilitant ou entravant la démarche, du point de vue tant du contexte que du processus, sont discutés par la suite. Nous concluons sur une mise en perspective des apprentissages réalisés au regard de la santé durable et de la résilience du système de santé et de services sociaux.

Abstract

The deterioration of Quebec’s long-term care centres (CHSLDs) and other organizational issues require certain transformations, including architectural ones, whose processes are poorly documented. In this article, we present an aspect of an action research project that began in 2020 amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic: the renovation of two secured units intended for elderly people with severe loss of autonomy and cognitive disorders in a CHSLD in the Quebec region. This intervention created new living spaces and aimed to provide a built environment favourable to the health of workers and residents. We describe the origin of the action research project, the stages of intervention and the issues that emerged at each stage of the co-construction. Then, we discuss facilitating and hindering factors from both contextual and process perspectives. In our conclusion, we situate the lessons learned in terms of sustainable health and the resilience of the health and social services system.
