Résumé
Cet article au caractère programmatique donne l’occasion à l’auteur et à l’autrice de présenter un état de la question sur les études portant sur la vie musicale franco-américaine, ainsi qu’un cadre théorique d’histoire culturelle transnationale s’appliquant aux pratiques, aux produits et aux acteurs et actrices des industries culturelles francophones du Nord-Est américain. Ce cadre est ensuite appliqué à une première étude de cas sommaire portant sur deux compagnies établies dans le Massachusetts au cours des années 1910 et 1920 : 1) les éditions E. L. Turcot, fondées par Edmour Louis Turcotte à Lowell en 1913; 2) et La Patrie Disc Français, fondée vers 1919-1921 par Joseph David Noël à Lawrence. Leur exemple permet d’illustrer le caractère transnational et circulatoire, plutôt que national et diffusionniste, de la commercialisation des sons chez les francophones du Québec et de la Nouvelle-Angleterre au début du 20e siècle.

Abstract
In this programmatic article, the authors take the opportunity to present the state of the art in studies of Franco-American musical life, as well as a theoretical framework for transnational cultural history as it applies to the practices, products and actors of the Francophone cultural industries of the American Northeast. The authors then apply this framework to an initial summary case study of two companies established in Massachusetts during the 1910s and 1920s: 1) E. L. Turcot Editions, founded by Edmour Louis Turcotte in Lowell in 1913; 2) and La Patrie Disc Français, founded around 1919–1921 by Joseph David Noël in Lawrence. The case study illustrates the transnational and circulatory, rather than national and diffusionist, nature of how sounds (and music) were marketed among francophones in Quebec and New England in the early twentieth century.
