Résumé

Cet article retrace l’existence d’une forme récurrente du nationalisme québécois qu’il désigne sous le terme de « nationalisme éthique ». En effet, le nationalisme canadien-français puis québécois ne s’est pas seulement attaché au catholicisme comme marqueur de différence ethnique. Il n’a pas non plus écarté toute considération éthique en déployant un nationalisme autre que « moderne ». Au contraire, afin de se dire catholique, ce nationalisme a dû chercher au sein du catholicisme des justifications éthiques à son existence et même une inspiration pour ses projets de société et son idée du bien commun. L’auteur développe cette thèse en identifiant trois grandes périodes historiques, synchroniques et diachroniques, du milieu du 19^e siècle à la deuxième moitié du 20^e siècle, en présentant, pour chacune d’elles, la réflexion de quelques grandes figures intellectuelles.

Abstract

This article traces the existence of a recurring form of Quebec nationalism that is called “ethical nationalism.” Indeed, French-Canadian nationalism, and later Quebec nationalism, did not simply focus on Catholicism as a marker of ethnic difference. Nor did it set aside all ethical considerations by deploying a nationalism that was anything other than “modern.” On the contrary, in order to call itself Catholic, this nationalism has had to look to Catholicism for ethical justifications for its existence, and even for inspiration for its societal plans and notion of the common good. To build and support this thesis, I identify three major historical periods spanning from the middle of the 19th to the second half of the 20th century. I present these periods both synchronically and diachronically, featuring distinct intellectual figures for each of them.
