Des sociologues en campagne : sociographie de la différenciation sociale du Québec rural francophone Sociologists in the country: a sociography of social differentiation in rural Quebec

Résumé

Une relecture de la tradition monographique en sociologie du Québec, et plus particulièrement des travaux de Léon Gérin, permet de mettre en évidence, en première partie de l’article, la centralité des réseaux familiaux dans la production et la reproduction de la société canadienne-française du 19^e et de la première moitié du 20^e siècle. La structuration familiale des rapports sociaux était cependant différenciée entre les élites canadiennes-françaises et les populations rurales. À partir des résultats d’une enquête ethnographique dans un village québécois, nous examinerons, en deuxième partie, l’hypothèse que les réseaux familiaux, qui structurent l’enracinement territorial, demeurent encore aujourd’hui une logique dominante des rapports sociaux dans le village étudié, malgré la fragilisation des réseaux familiaux les plus anciens depuis la Révolution tranquille et la subséquente régionalisation des activités politiques. Nous montrerons enfin que la fragilisation des réseaux familiaux rappelle la différenciation sociale observée dans la tradition monographique en sociologie du Québec, entre les élites canadiennes-françaises et les populations rurales.

Abstract

The article begins with an overview of the monographic tradition in sociology of Quebec, in particular including the work of Léon Gérin. More specifically, this introduction highlights the centrality of family networks in the maintenance and evolution of French-Canadian society in the 19^th century and the first half of the 20^th century. Yet, this family-based structure of the social relations differs between French-Canadian elites and rural populations. Based on the results of an ethnographic study which I conducted in a Quebec village, I show, in the second part of the article, that the family networks at the basis of territorial rootedness remain to this day a dominant force in the social relations in this village — despite the weakening of these older networks since the Quiet Revolution and the regionalization of political activities. Finally, I correlate the weakening of these family networks to the social differentiation observed in the monographic tradition of Quebec sociology between French-Canadian elites and rural populations.
