Esquisse d’une genèse de la société acadienne Sketch of the birth of Acadian society

Résumé

Les interprétations de la société acadienne reposent souvent sur une vision essentialiste de la nation, présupposant les fondements d’une société dans la période pré-déportation, soit avant le milieu du 18^e siècle. Cet article vise à expliciter le processus d’édification nationale qui s’est plutôt produit dans la deuxième moitié du 19^e siècle à partir de la construction d’une référence, comme le propose Fernand Dumont. La nouvelle élite lettrée formée par l’établissement d’un collège classique développa de nouveaux modes d’interprétation à partir des écrits arrivés de l’extérieur et mettant en scène les déportations du 18^e siècle. Il aura donc fallu une médiation par l’avènement de cette littérature et du premier journal de langue française pour que se développe le sentiment collectif de former une communauté d’histoire dépassant les liens familiaux et les liens de proximité et que se déploient les idéologies permettant aux membres du groupe de se projeter collectivement dans l’avenir. La cristallisation des repères et des symboles consolidant la cohérence d’ensemble et le caractère national des Acadiens devint particulièrement apparente à partir du premier projet collectif, la première Convention nationale.

Abstract

Interpretations of Acadian society are often based on an essentialist view of the nation that situates the foundation of this society in the pre-deportation period before the mid-18^th century. This article, by contrast, aims to elucidate the process of Acadian nation building that took shape in the second half of the 19th century starting from a framework of reference developed by Fernand Dumont. A new intellectual elite, formed by the establishment of the first collège classique, then developed new modes of interpretation based on writings from abroad that described and thematized the deportations of the 18th century. It is with the onset of this type of literature, and the publication of the first French language newspaper, that the Acadian people gradually developed a collective sense of history that went beyond family ties and their immediate proximity as well as a common vision of the future. The crystallization of reference points and symbols consolidating a sense of social cohesion and the national character of the Acadians became particularly apparent with their first collective project, the First Acadian Convention.
