Philippe Garigue et le Canada français

Résumé

L’article porte sur la contribution de Philippe Garigue à l’étude du Canada français et veut redonner à ce penseur négligé en sciences sociales la place qui lui revient dans l’héritage intellectuel du Québec. Après avoir présenté la carrière du chercheur et ses principaux travaux sur le Canada français, l’article s’attarde à ses critiques méthodologiques et théoriques pour mieux faire apparaître les aspects plus novateurs de sa pensée. Il resitue la démarche de Garigue dans les débats épistémologiques et historiographiques sur la représentation du Canada français d’avant les années 1960 et propose une perspective critique de l’ensemble de son oeuvre au regard des analyses plus récentes. Au-delà du caractère polémique maintes fois attesté de ses travaux, l’article soutient que Garigue procède à une remise en question inédite, pour l’époque, de la représentation du Canada français d’avant les années 1960 comme une société d’Ancien Régime rurale et cause des difficultés des Canadiens français à s’émanciper. Par contre, d’autres aspects de son oeuvre ont moins bien vieilli, dont ses réflexions sur le nationalisme.

Abstract

This article concerns the contribution made by Philippe Garigue to the study of French Canada and attempts to credit this often-overlooked social scientist with the place he deserves within the intellectual heritage of Quebec. After presenting the career of the researcher and his principal works on French Canada, the article focuses on his methodological and theoretical critiques, highlighting several of the more innovative aspects of his thought at the time. The article resituates Garigue’s approach within the epistemological and historiographic discourse on the representation of French Canada prior to the 1960s and proposes a critical perspective on his entire body of work with regard to more recent analyses. Beyond the polemic character often attested by his works, the article argues that Garigue challenged, in a manner that was unprecedented at the time, the accepted representation of French Canada before the 1960s as a society of the rural old regime that, thwarted the empancipation of French Canadians. By contrast, other aspects of his work, such as his reflections on nationalism, have aged less well.
