Lionel Groulx et l’esprit du libéralisme

Résumé

À partir d’une définition qui privilégie la dimension politique du libéralisme, l’article montre que la pensée de Lionel Groulx allait, de manière générale, à l’encontre des principaux postulats de ce type de libéralisme. La conception organiciste de la nation, celle-ci étant comprise comme un « individu collectif », qui structure sa pensée, fait en sorte que Groulx subordonne l’individu au collectif. Dans cette perspective, Groulx prend la défense de la tradition et promeut une conception de l’éducation qui vise à favoriser le développement du sentiment d’appartenance nationale. Enfin, sa conception de l’État est elle aussi antilibérale, notamment parce qu’elle refuse la distinction entre le politique et le religieux.

Abstract

Based on a definition that emphasizes the political dimension of liberalism, this paper demonstrates that in a general sense, Lionel Groulx’s thought goes against the main postulates of this type of liberalism. The organicist concept of the nation, in which the nation is understood as a “collective individual”, with structured thought, brings Groulx to treat the individual as subordinate to the societal group. From this outlook, Groulx defends tradition and promotes a conception of education that aims to foster the development of the national feeling of belonging. Finally, his conception of the state is also anti-liberal, particularly because it rejects the distinction between the political and religious spheres.
