Michel Foucault : théorie et pratique. Réflexion sur l’expérience politique

Résumé

Les sciences sociales ont établi, grosso modo, d’une double manière leur rapport à la politique. Premièrement, la politique est évacuée des préoccupations du chercheur, au profit de la recherche de l’objectivité et du statut de science. D’autres croient, au nom du conditionnement social de la science, qu’elle participe non seulement à la vie politique, mais qu’elle est même un élément essentiel de la gouverne politique. Le travail théorique serait lié aux intérêts de ceux qui le font, aux classes sociales auxquelles ils appartiennent.

On peut cependant se demander si l’articulation que les sciences sociales donnent du rapport entre théorie et pratique constitue une fatalité à laquelle il est difficile, sinon impossible, d’échapper. Autrement dit, les sciences sociales sont-elles enfermées dans ce dilemme d’être soit une science et, du même coup, d’exclure la politique de leur champ d’activité, soit une idéologie et de ne pas avoir le statut de science?

Nous croyons qu’il existe une autre manière de penser le rapport de la théorie à la pratique, une façon d’échapper au dilemme des sciences sociales. Michel Foucault a montré — avec ses travaux sur la folie, la prison, la clinique, la sexualité, les sciences humaines… — que le travail historique et le travail politique étaient liés ensemble. Loin de s’exclure, écrit-il, « (… ) ils font corps, en une seule et même activité de déchiffrement ». C’est cette conception du rapport théorie/pratique dont nous voulons faire l’analyse. Elle repose sur une éthique du travail scientifique qui suppose de revoir les principes qui gouvernent nos manières de connaître — impératif du dire vrai — et surtout l’identité de celui qui connaît. Une telle éthique fonde une autre expérience du politique que celle qui structure nos conduites depuis deux siècles

Abstract

Generally speaking, social scientists have adopted either one of two attitudes toward politics. On the one hand, they have evacuated politics from their work and have sought objectivity in order to gain the status of science. On the other, they have integrated it, arguing that science is conditioned by its social environment and is thus not only an intrinsic part of politics but an essential element of the polity. In that view, theory is linked to the interests of those who make it and to the classes to which they belong.

We may wonder however if these interpretations of the relationship between theory and practice are inescapable. Indeed, we may question if social sciences are really and definitively trapped in this dilemma of being either science or ideology.

We believe that there is a way out, that there is an alternative understanding of this relationship. Michel Foucault has shown—with his studies on madness, prison, clinic, sexuality, human science…—that historical and political investigations are intimately linked. He argues that, far from excluding each other, these two activities are of the same nature, part of a similar search for understanding. It is this conception that we want to further analyze here. It rests on a work ethic that asks that we re-examine the principles governing our practices of knowledge—the imperative of thruth—and most importantly, the identity of the one who knows. Such an ethic promotes an experience of politics quite different from the one that has structured our behavior for two centuries.
