Abstract
In the context of increasing urbanisation, there is a tendency for humans to spend less time in nature, which has the effect of reducing their access to the psychological benefits that nature provides. The aim of this study was to identify the most effective substitute (photographs, videos or virtual reality) for reducing ruminations and anxiety in cases where direct access to nature is not possible. A total of 236 participants were exposed to natural or urban environments via a substitute after a ruminative induction task. A control group was exposed to geometric shapes. The analyses confirmed that exposure to nature in all three forms was beneficial, but that nature experiences in virtual reality or video provided greater restorative benefits than photographs.
