RÉSUMÉ
Le présent article démontre que la position sujet dans la construction existentielle en créole haïtien reste inoccupée en structure de surface, mais qu’elle doit être utilisée comme un lieu de transit quand un syntagme-QU se déplace vers une position supérieure. Etant donné que l’haïtien ne permet pas l’emploi libre de sujets nuls, le premier fait reste problématique dans le cadre explicatif du Principe de projection étendu, cf. Chomsky (1981). Le deuxième fait s’explique cependant très bien du point de vue de la Théorie d’économie de dérivation et de représentation, cf. Chomsky (1989). La position sujet étant la position disponible la plus proche, elle sert de relais au déplacement d’un syntagme vers une position supérieure.
ABSTRACT
This paper shows that the subject position in the existential construction in Haitian is not occupied by anything at S-structure, but the position must be used as a transit site when a Wh-phrase moves to a higher SpecCP. Given that Haitian does not freely allow null subjects, the first fact is problematic for the Extended Projection Principle, cf. Chomsky (1981). The second fact can be readily accommodated in the theory of economy of derivation and representation, cf. Chomsky (1989). Being the nearest available landing site, the subject position must be used in movement to a more distant position.
