Abstract
This article discusses the value of thematic roles for the description of phenomena of grammar. Notions like agent, patient, etc. do not have any explanatory value in the grammar. For instance, there is no relationship between the middle, subject selection in English and the impersonal passive in Dutch and these roles. This makes it impossible for the language learner to distil them from the grammatical system. The notion of Event Structure creates a more explanatory link between the grammar and semantics. This notion explains the functioning of impersonal passive in Dutch. It is notions like this one that should play a principal role in a more explanatory semantic theory.

Cet article contient une discussion de la valeur des rôles thématiques pour la description de phénomènes grammaticaux. Des notions comme agent, patient, etc. n’ont pas de valeur explicative au domaine des phénomènes grammaticaux. Par exemple, une relation entre le moyen; la sélection du sujet en anglais et le passif impersonnel en néerlandais et ces rôles est absente. Ceci rend impossible leur apprentissage. La notion de Event Structure établi une relation plus claire entre la grammaire et la sémantique. Cette notion explique le fonctionnement du passif impersonnel en Néerlandais. C’est une telle notion, qui peut jouer un rôle principale dans une théorie sémantique plus explicative.
