De l’extrême à l’agonal dans l’univers chorégraphique de Pina Bausch From the Extreme to Agonality in Pina Bausch’s Choreographic Work

Résumé

L’esthétique de l’excès dans la danse-théâtre de la chorégraphe allemande Pina Bausch, pionnière dans son genre, a eu un impact considérable sur la scène contemporaine en Europe. En partant de l’analyse de quelques pièces choisies, l’auteure met en évidence deux modalités majeures de cette esthétique : l’agonalité et la répétition. L’extrême s’y inscrit, d’une part, sous forme de surenchère – notamment dans les images de femmes enragées et révoltées – et, d’autre part, sous forme d’antagonismes entre deux forces. Cependant, le traitement de l’agonal chez Pina Bausch, loin de confirmer les stéréotypes du genre, révèle la fonction créatrice du conflit ainsi qu’une dimension féministe qui consiste à transformer la lutte des sexes en compétition et jeu à base d’égalité.

Abstract

The aesthetics of excess in the German choreograph Pina Bausch’s dance-theatre, a pioneer in her own field, has had a considerable impact on the contemporary dance scene in Europe. The analysis of a few chosen pieces enables the author of this article to identify two major modalities in the choreograph’s aesthetic : agonality and repetition. In Pina Bausch’s choreographic work the extreme takes the shape of an « outbidding » especially in the images of enraged and revolted women on the one hand and of antagonisms between two forces on the other hand. But far from consolidating the stereotypes of gender, the way Pina Bausch depicts agonality reveals the creative function of conflict as well as a feminist dimension, which consists in transforming the battle of the sexes.
