Résumé
Pour comprendre théoriquement la notion de backlash, il faut, en règle générale, dégager une terminologie analytiquement utile de l’ensemble de ses associations politiques usuelles. Dans l’usage courant, le backlash est associé à une réaction conservatrice à un changement social et politique progressiste (ou libéral) et l’ouvrage de Faludi (1991) est un classique du genre. Dans cet article, toutefois, les auteures visent une définition non idéologique du backlash qui s’inscrit dans une approche un peu plus neutre de son étude. Dans l’usage courant, le backlash comprend autant des actes de persuasion véritable que des actes de pouvoir. Pour leur part, les auteures soutiennent qu’il serait plus utile, sur le plan analytique, d’employer ce terme uniquement pour les actes de pouvoir coercitif. Elles se basent en ce sens sur la littérature sociologique sur les mouvements sociaux et les contre-mouvements de même que sur la littérature de science politique sur le pouvoir, les préférences et les intérêts. Les exemples apportés par les auteures sont tirés principalement du contexte étatsunien et des débats sur le genre et le féminisme. Elles commencent donc là où le processus de backlash lui-même commence, avec le pouvoir et la remise en question du statu quo.

Abstract
To understand backlash theoritically, we must first carve out an analytically useful term from the cluster of its common political associations. In colloquial usage “backlash” denotes politically conservative reaction to progressive (or liberal) social and political change (Faludi 1991 is a classic in this vein). Here, however, we attempt a nonideological définition of backlash embedded in a more neutral approach to its study. In colloquial usage, backlash includes acts of genuine persuasion as well as of power. Here, however, we suggest that it may be analytically helpful to confine its meaning to acts of coercive power. We draw on the sociological litterature on social movements and countermovements, as well as the political science litterature on power, preferences, and interests. We focus mostly on examples drawn from the United States and relating to feminism and gender. We begin where the process of backlash itself begins, with power and a challenge to the status quo.
