La cohabitation intergénérationnelle, le genre et la parenté au Québec Kinship, Gender and Intergenerational Living Arrangements

Résumé

La cohabitation intergénérationnelle constitue une modalité résidentielle qui, depuis quelques années, attire l’attention de plusieurs acteurs sociaux engagés dans les débats qui concernent l’offre de logement adapté aux besoins des personnes âgées québécoises. Cet article l’aborde en tant que pratique fortement ancrée dans les rapports de genre et de parenté, dans une démarche comparative qui s’appuie notamment sur les résultats d’une enquête empirique menée dans la région de Québec en 2002-2003. Un exposé des transformations qui ont marqué les pratiques de cohabitation intergénérationnelle au Japon depuis trois décennies permet de mettre en relief les particularités de la situation québécoise.

Abstract

In Quebec, various organisations linked to the State or civil society are considering intergenerational houses as a living arrangement that can positively contribute to the housing needs of older people. This article considers the implications of kinship and gender cultural, familial and personal norms and practices on this kind of living arrangements and particularly on women. Empirical data from a study conducted in Quebec City in 2002-2003 and second-hand data illustrating recent transformations in co-residence patterns and daughter-in-laws response to assigned duties in Japan are used to highlight the specificities of the situation in Quebec.
