Proximité et distance infinie chez Levinas : le serment du secret comme lutte éthique contre la tentation du sacré

Résumé

Emmanuel Levinas, dans Totalité et Infini (1961), décrit la relation de transcendance ou la religion comme en étant une où se mêlent à la fois proximité et distance infinie. Il s’agit d’une relation qui s’oppose au sacré compris comme relation fusionnelle, extatique et non éthique entre le Moi et un faux transcendant : l’« il y a ». Cet article cherchera à faire sens de cette association contradictoire entre proximité et distance infinie par le biais d’une clé de lecture phénoménologique décrivant la relation de transcendance comme initiation du Moi au secret d’Autrui. Cette proximité sera alors décrite comme serment : promesse que le Moi fait de ne pas blesser la confiance qu’Autrui lui accorde personnellement (élection) lorsqu’il lui révèle son secret dans toute sa vulnérabilité. Un serment qui, selon Levinas, lutte contre la tentation du sacré.

Abstract

Emmanuel Levinas, in Totality and Infinity (1961), describes the relation of transcendence or religion as one where both proximity and infinite distance coexist. It is a relationship which is opposed to the sacred understood as a fusional, ecstatic and non-ethical relationship between the I and a false transcendent: the “there is” (il y a). This article will seek to make sense of this contradictory association between proximity and infinite distance through a phenomenological reading that describes the relation of transcendence as the initiation of the I to the secret of the Other. This proximity will then be described as an oath: a promise that the I makes not to harm the trust that the Other places in him personally (election) when he reveals him his secret in all his vulnerability. An oath which, according to Levinas, fights against the temptation of the sacred.
