À partir de l’enquête Insee « Vie associative » de 2002, cet article vise à repérer au sein des catégories des ouvriers et employés les facteurs sociologiques contribuant à l’adhésion à une association. Il permet également de saisir les similitudes et les différences dans les motifs d’adhésion entre les ouvriers-employés et les cadres supérieurs selon le moment dans le cycle de vie. Entre autres facteurs, la situation économique et la situation professionnelle, qui ne sont pas sans rapport avec les ressources culturelles, influent sur les aspirations à être dans le monde associatif. Pour saisir les motifs d’adhésion en tenant compte du critère de l’âge, les auteurs proposent deux indices visant à mesurer pour l’un le cadre social de l’action de l’association (indice de socio-dépendance), pour l’autre l’orientation de l’action des adhérents (indice de motivation collective). Parmi les personnes les plus âgées (55-74 ans), si les ouvriers-employés justifient leur adhésion par la recherche d’une proximité relationnelle, les cadres semblent moins à la recherche du lien social comme finalité.

Abstract

Based on the INSEE survey on involvement in nonprofit organizations in 2002, this article attempts to identify the sociological factors that influence blue and white collar workers' decisions for joining nonprofit organizations. The article also shows the similarities and differences in the reasons for joining nonprofit organizations between blue/white collar workers and managers depending on the stage in the life cycle. The financial situation and job situation, which are not unconnected with cultural resources, are two of the factors that influence the decision to become a member of a nonprofit organization. To understand the motivations for joining while taking into account the criterion of age, the authors propose two indices that attempt to measure the social dimension of the nonprofit organization's activities (socio-dependence index) and the orientation of the members' activities (collective motivation index). In the oldest age group (55-74), the explanation blue/white collar workers give for becoming members concerns social relations while higher occupational groups seem less motivated by social reasons as the main objective.
