Résumé
Cet article porte sur les associations qui cherchent à concilier l’esprit militant et les normes gestionnaires. Les associations dites gestionnaires, dont l’objectif principal consiste à produire des richesses sociales, forment des structures productives originales entre privatisation des risques et socialisation des résultats. L’auteur montre que la production de sens est une activité de gestionnaire; en effet, l’agent associatif mène une action délibérée et organisée sur la dimension immatérielle des biens ou services qu’il produit, tout autant que sur leur dimension tangible. Sont ensuite identifiées les différentes trajectoires qui peuvent être suivies par l’organisation, selon la façon dont elle gère la tension entre son développement économique et le développement de son projet social. L’organisation associative qui recherche la meilleure combinaison productive est conduite à développer des dispositifs de gestion du sens, qui vont favoriser l’apparition d’une « fabrique de sens ». En s’appuyant sur l’exemple des Restos du coeur, l’article décrit ainsi une nouvelle forme d’organisation, sous le qualificatif générique d’organisation militante.
Abstract
This article looks at nonprofit organizations that try to balance activism and managerial standards. Nonprofit organizations with economic activities, whose main objective is producing social wealth, form unique productive structures between the privatization of risks and the socialization of performance. The author shows that the production of meaning is part of their economic operations. The nonprofit organization carries out an intentional and organized action on the intangible aspect of the goods and services that it produces as well as on the tangible level. The article then identifies the different paths that the organization can take depending on how it manages the tension between its economic growth and the development of its social program. The nonprofit organization that searches for the best productive combination is led to develop management tools for meaning, helping to create a “meaning production unit.” Taking the example of the food charity Restos du coeur, the article describes a new form of organization called an “activist organization.”
