Résumé

Si l’influence française sur le socialisme belge s’est exercée durant une bonne partie du XIX^e siècle, l’auteur s’interroge sur l’existence d’une influence du socialisme belge sur celui de France, en considérant la période qui sépare la création du Parti ouvrier belge (POB) de la Première Guerre mondiale. Le champ précis de la coopération, dont le poids au sein du POB constituait l’un des traits caractéristiques du mouvement socialiste belge, offre un éclairage intéressant à cette question. L’émigration temporaire ou définitive de travailleurs belges en France, le voyage en Belgique des socialistes français, la collaboration commune à des revues représentent trois modalités de contacts directs entre socialistes des deux pays. Le modèle de la coopération belge attire alors l’attention de socialistes français qui, bien souvent, s’en inspirent. Ainsi, de 1885 à 1914, leur opinion sur la coopération évolue sensiblement sous l’influence du modèle belge et de ses deux plus beaux fleurons : le Vooruit de Gand et la maison du peuple de Bruxelles.

Abstract

While the French influence on the Belgian socialist movement throughout a large part of the 19th century is well-known, the author considers the impact of Belgian socialism on French socialism during the period between the creation of the Belgian Labor Party (POB) and WW1. The important role of cooperatives in the POB made them one of the characteristic features of the Belgian socialist movement. Focusing on this area provides an interesting angle from which to examine this question. The large community of Belgian workers in France that resulted from their temporary or permanent emigration, the visits by French socialists in Belgium, and the mutual contributions to journals represent three forms of direct contact between French and Belgian socialists. In addition, the Belgian cooperative model attracted the attention of the French socialists, who were quite often inspired by it. From 1885 to 1914, their opinions about cooperatives markedly developed under the influence of the Belgian model and its two crown jewels: Ghent’s Vooruit and Brussels’ Maison du peuple.
