L’exploitation du loup-marin et son incidence sur l’occupation de la côte par les Montagnais de la Traite de Tadoussac, au XVIIIe siècle Seal Hunting and its Implications for the Occupation of the Shores of the St. Lawrence River by the Montagnais at the Tadoussac Trading Post during the 18th Century

Les sources du XVIIIe siècle contiennent de nombreuses informations touchant la chasse au loup-marin par les Montagnais. À l’époque, les Français soulignent l’importance de l’activité en distinguant, au sein de la population autochtone qui occupe le versant nord du Saint-Laurent, deux grands sous-groupes appelés respectivement « Sauvages du bord de la mer » et « Sauvages des terres ». Cette situation diffère de celle qui peut être reconstituée à partir des sources du XVIIe siècle, qui font peu référence à la chasse des mammifères marins par les Montagnais et n’associent aucune population spécifiquement au milieu marin. La confrontation des documents historiques indique que des changements importants se sont produits à la fin du XVIIe siècle ou au début du XVIIIe : le développement de l’exploitation commerciale du loup-marin et la diminution des orignaux amènent une partie des Montagnais à chasser le phoque plus intensivement et à prolonger leur occupation sur la frange côtière du fleuve Saint-Laurent.

Abstract

18th century written sources contain numerous references to seal hunting by the Montagnais Indians. At the time, the French outline the importance of this activity while distinguishing two important sub-groups within the native population occupying the north shore of the St. Lawrence: “Sauvages du bord de la mer”, literally “Savages living by the sea”, and “Sauvages des terres” or “Savages from the hinterland”. This situation differs from what can be gathered from the 17th century sources which make little reference to marine mammal hunting by the Montagnais and do not associate any specific Montagnais population to the marine environment. The comparison of different historical documents indicates that important changes took place at the end of the 17th century or at the beginning of the 18th century. The development of commercial seal hunting and the dwindling moose population led some of the Montagnais to hunt seal more intensively and to prolong the duration of their stay on the coastal fringe of the St. Lawrence River.
