Résumé
Cette recherche ethnohistorique sur l’habitant est abordée sous l’angle de sa représentation, soit de l’image qu’il projette, tout comme celle qu’on véhicule sur lui. Cette thématique s’appuie sur le socle suivant : l’altérité et le regard de l’Autre. Les sous-thèmes retenus portent sur la valorisation/dévalorisation de l’habitant et accessoirement de l’idéalisation. Pour les missionnaires, comme pour les Autochtones, les autorités administratives ou encore le roi de France, ce bâtisseur de la première heure ne représente pas l’habitant souhaité. En raison de son indépendance, de sa recherche de liberté, de son attrait pour les pelleteries, voire sa « canadianité », il demeure pour ces observateurs, même pour ceux du tout début du Régime anglais, cet « Autre », ce différent, tant dans ses valeurs que dans sa vision du monde.
Abstract
This ethnohistorical study examines the representation of the “habitant”: how he has been portrayed in imagery and how he has portrayed himself. The theoretical basis of the analysis is a reflection on otherness and the vision projected from without. The study includes sub-themes related to concepts of valorization/devaluation regarding the “habitant” and also deals with the question of idealization. From the viewpoint of the missionaries, as well as that of First Nations peoples, administrative authorities and even the King of France, this early founder did not represent the desired settler. Due to his independent spirit, his taste for freedom, his attraction to the fur trade, and even his specifically Canadian character, he remained, in the eyes of chroniclers of the French Regime and the early British period, a true outsider, a character with totally separate values and worldviews.
