Résumé
À travers quelques exemples de chansons de labeur ou de chansons de rogne empruntées à l’histoire de l’activité chansonnière française et québécoise, je montrerai comment la relation au travail sert de point d’appui théorique aux transformations relationnelles qui s’opèrent entre le chanteur et l’objet-chanson. Je montrerai d’abord la fonction symbolique et collective de la chanson : son rôle de vecteur, d’amplificateur des pulsions revendicatrices tout autant que son rôle cathartique. Avant l’avènement de la société industrielle et la société de consommation, c’est l’interprète-artisan (le « faiseur de chanson ») qui joue de sa chanson dans le cadre d’une pratique fonctionnelle et privée. Les bouleversements socio-économiques de la fin du XIXe siècle vont non seulement entraîner la disparition des métiers évoqués dans les chansons de tradition orale mais de surcroît la chanson se médiatise par le biais de salles de spectacles, puis par la radio, le microphone, etc. L’interprète-médiatisé participe à une médiatisation de la chanson, donc à une chanson sortie de son contexte de performance d’origine d’où l’usage péjoratif que nous avons fait du terme folklorique. Si l’on aborde le corpus chansonnier en considérant d’une part la chanson de tradition orale et d’autre part la chanson littéraire, c’est-à-dire à auteur et compositeur connus, et née dans un contexte éditorial, on remarque deux aspects qui les différencient : la nature de la pratique de l’interprète et la fonction du répertoire qu’il chante. Les interactions entre ces deux composantes se doublent d’une médiation évolutive du phénomène chansonnier. Ainsi, entre le milieu du XIXe siècle et le début du XXe siècle, la professionnalisation du métier de chanteur va de pair avec une disparition de la fonction première de la chanson de tradition orale. Si cette chanson, encore transmise oralement au XIXe siècle, accompagne les travaux des champs, les manoeuvres des marins, sa fonctionnalité première disparaîtra avec nombre de métiers. Elle fera place à une médiatisation de la tradition conjointe à une professionnalisation du métier de chanteur ce qui témoigne d’un passage de la sphère des métiers (privée) à la sphère publique et commerciale. Le travail n’est plus celui d’un interprète-artisan ‒ le marin ou le paysan qui transmet fidèlement le répertoire de la chanson de rogne de générations en générations ‒ mais d’un interprète médiatisé qui restitue la théâtralité du texte chansonnier sans pour autant participer du métier ou du travail qu’il décrit. On assiste ainsi à un changement de modi operandi des phénomènes chansonniers. Dans le présent travail, je m’attarderai à monter quelques exemples des phénomènes chansonniers caractéristiques des relations entre la tradition orale et le travail.
Abstract
Using some examples of work related songs or protest songs borrowed from the French and Québécois repertoires, I will show in this article how links to work activities theoretically reinforce the transformations in the relationship between singers and songs themselves. I will first explain the symbolic and collective function of the song : its role as a vector, expanding the urge to resist while at the same time contributing to a healing process. Before the development of industrial and consumer society it was the folk performer who created songs in various contexts. Late nineteenth century transformations not only eliminated the trades mentioned in traditional songs, but eventually led to songs being appropriated by radio and other media. Singers participated in this media transformation, and songs left their original performance context, which came to be referred to negatively as « folklorique ». Looking at the two main components in the chansonnier repertoire, traditional songs and those of literary origin (meaning those whose author and composer are known), we see that the two types of songs are very different both in the nature of the performer and the function of his repertory. The differences between the two also increased during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when the professional singer arrived on the scene at a time when folksongs were losing their original function. Thus, songs that accompanied work in the fields or on sailing ships were losing their purpose. The songs therefore moved from a private work related sphere to a public and commercial sphere. The folk performer who transmitted his repertoire from one generation to the next was then replaced by a media performer who approached working songs ’topics from a theatrical viewpoint, completely detached from the actual work activities involved in their texts. The phenomenon of traditional song then changed its modi operandi. In this article, I will give some examples of songs that characterize the relationship between work and oral traditions.
