Abstract
Accessing and maintaining employment is a major obstacle for people with disabilities. One of the main difficulties they face in the labour market is the disclosure of their disabilities. The present research aims to capture the experiences and choices related to disclosure and the factors influencing them.
A qualitative thematic analysis has been conducted with data from 34 semi-structured interviews conducted in Québec and New Brunswick (Canada) with workers with disabilities (motor, visual or chronic pain).
The results show that although the participants perceived the labour market as discriminatory, few of them reported not having disclosed their disabilities. Several factors, such as their work environment, their perception of the labour market and the visibility of their disabilities influence the process of disclosure. This study concludes that there is a need to improve the inclusion of people with disabilities in workplaces, which continue to be a place where disability is created.
