After more than 200 years and much confusion surrounding Brock’s last words, it is not surprising that there should be a growing consensus in favour of a silent death. Yet, while modern interpretations have concluded that Brock’s fatal wound prevented him from saying anything, several eye-witness accounts suggest otherwise—even going so far as to contradict his famous battle cry: “Push on the brave York Volunteers!” As part of his on-going research into the life and generalship of Canada’s War of 1812 hero, Guy St-Denis offers an analysis of all the surviving evidence for a better understanding of Brock’s final utterance.

In the 1880s, the southwestern region of Ontario, including Essex County and Pelee Island, became home to a series of pioneering winemakers. While the story of the winemakers of Pelee Island has been told, far less has been written about the vineyards of the Windsor border region. Jules Robinet, emerged as a successful winemaker at the turn of the 20^th century after a series of hardships wiped out most of his competition. In time, Robinet`s business flourished with the enactment of Prohibition laws in Canada and the United States. An immigrant from Rougemont, France, Robinet served as a key link in the migration chain of French labourers and grape growers who settled in and around the Town of Sandwich. For French immigrants, he emerged as an employer, business associate, and advocate for the community that found its roots in the very same region of France.

Drawing on personal letters, published memoirs, and court martial records, this article investigates the gendered and ethnic implications of the Battle of the Windmill in November 1838. While this invasion of Upper Canada by the Hunter Patriots has often been seen as the final chapter of the 1837 Canadian Rebellions, it was also an episode imbued with Irish fraternal societies, Irish politics, notions of Irish manliness, and the attempts of Irish settlers to earn their place within “respectable” Upper Canadian society. The scandalous castration of an Irish officer and the mistreatment of dead soldiers’ bodies stood in direct contrast to the value each force placed on heroic martial manliness. Despite the relatively small size of the battlefield, the legacy of the battle itself significantly impacted how Irish settlers were treated in Upper Canadian society at the end of the 1830s.

This article examines the construction of the Burlington Bay Canal, Upper Canada’s first government-financed internal improvement. Designed in 1824 to create an entrance to a natural harbour at the head of Lake Ontario, the canal was an engineering, financial and political fiasco. Using a staples thesis approach, this study explores the reasons for the canal’s problem.

This Hamilton, Ontario today displays stark socioeconomic disparities in health which pattern along north/south lines within the city. Diphtheria provides a useful lens for examining the historical nature of these socioeconomic disparities. Data were collected from death registrations for the period 1900 to 1921 and 321 deaths were mapped in ArcMap. Diphtheria mortality rates were higher in the north overall; however, no difference was found for the 5–16 year age group (school age). Higher mortality in children under age five in the north due to factors associated with low SES may explain the differing rates. These results demonstrate the social inequalities in health that existed in early-twentieth century Hamilton and their geographic dimension.

La ville d’Hamilton en Ontario présente aujourd’hui de fortes disparités socioéconomiques en termes de santé qui se moulent à la division nord/sud de la ville. La diphtérie nous permet d’examiner la nature historique de ces disparités. Des données recueillies de l’enregistrement des décès depuis 1900 jusqu’à 1921 ont permis l’analyse de 321 décès dans ArcMap. Malgré le fait que le taux de mortalité de la diphtérie était plus élevé au nord en général, aucune différence n’a été repérée dans le groupe d’âge de 5 à 16 ans. Dans le nord, le taux de mortalité plus élevé chez les enfants de moins de 5 ans serait alors lié aux facteurs associés avec une faible position socioéconomique. Ces résultats démontrent la dimension géographique de l’inégalité sociale en matière de santé qui existait à Hamilton au début du 20e siècle.
