Résumé
L’article présente les résultats d’un projet développé pendant deux ans visant à comprendre quels sont les principaux facteurs de motivation de personnes étudiantes en allemand langue étrangère dans une université montréalaise parmi : 1) la motivation pour l’inscription à un cours, 2) les facteurs liés aux approches didactiques et modalités d’enseignement favorisant le maintien de l’inscription, 3) la personnalité de l’enseignant, 4) les méthodes de travail et stratégies d’apprentissage et 5) les préférences de l’étudiant quant à son engagement cognitif, social et affectif, ainsi que les relations qui s’initient et se développent entre les divers acteurs de la classe. Il ressort que les variables liées au troisième facteur sont particulièrement importantes aux yeux des participants. Un second objectif est de voir comment ces facteurs sont corrélés à la persévérance dans l’apprentissage. L’article aborde finalement quelques activités mises en place pour favoriser la construction du sentiment d’appartenance des différents profils de personnes étudiantes et un rapport positif avec l’équipe enseignante.

Abstract
This article presents the results of a two-year project aimed at understanding the key factors influencing the perseverance of students learning German as a foreign language at a university in Montreal: These factors include 1) the motivation for enrolling in a course, 2) the factors linked to didactic approaches and teaching methods which support continued enrollment, 3) the teacher’s personality, 4) working methods and learning strategies, and 5) students’ preferences regarding their cognitive, social, and emotional engagement, as well as the relationships between the various participants that emerge and develop in the classroom. It appears that the variables linked to the third factor are particularly important in the eyes of the students. A second objective is to examine how these factors are correlated with perseverance in learning. The article also discusses several activities designed to foster a sense of belonging among students with diverse profiles and to promote positive relationships with the team of teachers.
