Une frontière aux contours flous : animalité, handicap et humanité A Blurred Border: Animality, Disability, and Humanity

Résumé

En s’appuyant sur les travaux publiés en études du handicap et en éthique animale, cet article propose une analyse critique de la convergence des luttes anticapacitiste et antispéciste. Nous nous intéressons dans un premier temps aux similarités de ces mouvements au niveau de leur cadre théorique, mais aussi dans leur manière de lutter pour la justice. Nous soulignons notamment le rôle essentiel des alliés, la condamnation de la hiérarchisation morale des individus en vertu de leur contribution sociale et de leurs capacités physiques et cognitives, ainsi que la nécessité de prendre en compte l’hétérogénéité des expériences au sein d’un même groupe social. La mise en commun de ces luttes ne va pas de soi et elle a pu susciter des réticences de la part de personnes en situation de handicap, notamment à l’idée d’associer handicap et animalité alors que l’animalisation est un processus déshumanisant encore à l’oeuvre dans les discriminations capacitistes. Nous soutenons toutefois que le dépassement de la frontière humanité/animalité offre une meilleure fondation conceptuelle pour défier ces dominations aux racines communes. Cette mise en commun nous semble particulièrement nécessaire, car la frontière qui sépare les humains des animaux non humains participe de la même logique de distinction et d’infériorisation qui permet de déshumaniser socialement et symboliquement certains groupes, bien qu’étant biologiquement humains. Il s’agit alors de critiquer la frontière qui sépare les humains des animaux, en soulignant qu’elle est moins ontologique ou biologique que normative, morale et politique. Nous montrons cela en argumentant que cette frontière repose en grande partie sur un appel à la « Nature » et sur la valorisation philosophique de l’autonomie rationnelle au détriment de la vulnérabilité.

Abstract

Drawing on published works in disability studies and animal ethics, this article offers a critical analysis of the convergence between anti-ableist and anti-speciesist struggles. We first examine the similarities between these movements in terms of their theoretical framework, but also in their approaches to fighting for justice. We particularly emphasize the essential role of allies, the condemnation of moral hierarchization of individuals based on their social contribution and physical and cognitive abilities, as well as the necessity of considering the heterogeneity of experiences within the same social group. The convergence of these struggles is not self-evident and has met with resistance from some disabled people, particularly regarding the association between disability and animality, especially since animalization remains an active dehumanizing process in ableist discrimination. However, we argue that moving beyond the humanity/animality boundary offers a better conceptual foundation for challenging these forms of domination with common roots. This convergence appears particularly necessary, as the boundary separating humans from nonhuman animals participates in the same logic of distinction and inferiorization that allows certain groups of people to be socially and symbolically dehumanized, despite belonging to the species homo sapiens. Our aim is thus to critique the boundary separating humans from animals by emphasizing that it is less ontological or biological than normative and moral. We demonstrate this by highlighting how this boundary largely rests on an appeal to « Nature » and on the philosophical valorization of rational autonomy at the expense of vulnerability.
