De l’analogie à l’enchevêtrement : esclavisation humaine et exploitation animale From Analogy to Entanglement: Human Slavery and Animal Exploitation

Résumé

Cet article propose de revenir sur l’analogie entre esclavisation humaine, notamment dans sa forme étatsunienne, et exploitation animale. Il partira d’une relecture de The Dreaded Comparison. Human and Animal Slavery, de Marjorie Spiegel (1988), et l’enrichira d’études plus tardives sur des questions similaires.

L’article interroge l’analogie établie entre la mise en esclavage humain et l’exploitation animale permet de penser des logiques de domination communes, et les idéologies qui les sous-tendent. Les questions qui guideront l’étude seront les suivantes : au-delà de leur étymologie, quel lien peut-on établir entre domestication et domination ? L’épistémologie de l’enchevêtrement est-elle plus appropriée que celle de l’analogie pour penser le lien entre esclavisation humaine et exploitation animale ? Enfin, l’abolition de l’esclavage (dans sa forme étatsunienne) permet-elle d’envisager un horizon possible d’émancipation pour les animaux non humains ?

Abstract

This article returns to the analogy between human enslavement, particularly in its US form, and animal exploitation. It will start from a rereading of The Dreaded Comparison. Human and Animal Slavery, by Marjorie Spiegel (1988), and will enrich it with later studies on similar or related questions.

One can wonder whether the analogy drawn between human slavery and animal exploitation is a good tool to think about common logics of domination, and the ideologies that undergird them. The questions that will guide the study will be the following: beyond their etymology, what link can be established between domestication and domination? Is the epistemology of entanglement more appropriate for thinking about the connection between human enslavement and animal exploitation than the epistemology of analogy? Finally, does the abolition of slavery (in its US form) make it possible to envisage a possible horizon of emancipation for non-human animals?
