Abstract
How can, and do, Indigenous thinkers and artists reckon with the simultaneous horrors and vibrancy of the long eighteenth century? Aute is the NZ Māori name for a kind of cloth created from the paper mulberry plant across the Pacific region that is more widely known as tapa. Tracing the ends and new beginnings of aute production, paying attention to three different moments in which I have connected with eighteenth-century tapa, and reciting a multi-directional genealogy of Indigenous people who engage directly with tapa and/or the eighteenth century, I propose the concept of ‘Aute life.’ Ultimately, ‘Aute life’ is an orientation to the eighteenth century that centres Indigenous critical and creative engagements with that period; attending to dying and dyeing, it reframes absence or loss as presence or continuity, and pushes us to reconsider the limits and possibilities of who we think does work on, or with, the eighteenth century.

Comment les penseurs et artistes autochtones peuvent-ils faire face à la fois à la vitalité et aux horreurs du long xviiie siècle ? Dans la langue maorie, en Nouvelle-Zélande, le mot aute désigne une sorte d’étoffe végétale aussi connue sous le nom de tapa, fabriquée à partir d’un mûrier à papier que l’on trouve dans la région du Pacifique. En retraçant les fins et les recommencements de la production de l’aute, en prêtant attention à trois moments où j’ai pu entrer en contact avec le tapa du xviiie siècle, et en établissant une généalogie multidirectionnelle des peuples autochtones interagissant directement avec le tapa et/ou le xviiie siècle, je propose le concept de « vie aute ». La « vie aute » offre une perspective centrée sur les rapports créatifs et critiques des autochtones avec cette période ; évoquant à la fois la mort (dying) et la coloration (dyeing), elle redéfinit l’absence et la perte comme présence et continuité ; elle nous invite en outre à reconsidérer, tant dans ses possibilités que dans ses limites, l’identité des personnes qui travaillent sur, ou avec, le xviiie siècle.
