Abstract
“The west wants in” was the rallying cry of the Reform Party launched in 1987. What the West wanted, how its aspirations could be fulfilled within Confederation, and how fulfilling them might change Canada itself came to dominate the party’s agenda over the next decade or so. The West’s relationship to the rest of the country has also been a major theme in Canadian labour history, of ten with respect to notions of “western radicalism” or “western exceptionalism.” Reviewing Labour / Le Travail’s coverage of Canadian labour over the past quarter-century, this article reviews the extent to which western workers have been represented, the varying ways in which their identity has been characterized, and the degree to which traditional perceptions of a “radical” West have been either reinforced or revised as a result.

« L’Ouest veut se faire une place » a été le cri de ralliement du Parti réformiste lancé en 1987. Ce que l’Ouest voulait, comment ses aspirations pourraient se faire répondre au sein de la Confédération et comment le fait de répondre à ces aspirations pourrait changer le Canada a dominé le programme du Parti réformiste prévu pour les dix prochaines années ou plus. La relation de l’Ouest avec le reste du pays a aussi été un thème principal dans l’histoire de la main-d’œuvre au Canada, souvent à l’égard des notions du « radicalisme » ou de « l’extrêmisme » de l’Ouest. En se concentrant sur le contenu du Labour/Le Travail relatif à la main-d’œuvre canadienne au cours des vingt-cinq dernières années, cet article examine jusqu’à quel point les travailleurs de l’Ouest ont été représentés, les différentes façons dans lesquelles leur identité a été caractérisée, et jusqu’à quel point les perceptions tradionnelles du « radicalisme » de l’Ouest ont été soient renforcées soient révisées par la suite.
