Abstract
During most of the 1960s, the CSN was both an advocate of provincial autonomy and a defender of federalism. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, however, a majority of its militants came to favour separatism. In 1980, the CSN gave its critical approval to a yes vote in the referendum. Yet the labour union central did not officially endorse independence, mostly because its leadership feared internal divisions and disaffiliations. In addition, the CSN expressed its disappointment with the governmental record of the Parti québécois which had come to power in 1976.
Résumé
Jusqu'a la fin des années 1960, la CSN adhère au fédéralisme tout en appuyant l'autonomie du Québec. A la toute fin de la décennie et au début des années 1970 une majorité de dirigeants syndicaux et de militants optent pour le séparatisme. En 1980, la CSN donne son appui critique à un oui au référendum. Or, pour éviter des divisions internes et des désaffiliations, la CSN ne prends pas position en faveur de l'indépendance. En plus, la centrale se dit désillusionnée des politiques du gouvernment péquiste qui a pris le pouvoir en 1976.
