Abstract
This article examines the material history of medieval disability by studying two manuscripts of the Miracles of Saint Louis from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. It argues that mobility aids not only rendered disability visible to medieval eyes and the historical record — much like the modern perception of the wheelchair— but also “augmented” the disabled body, enabling new forms of movement and autonomy. Adopting a cross-disciplinary and comparative approach, this study examines the diverse designs of mobility aids and their adaptability to the specific needs of individuals, depending on their environment. Far from being passive objects, these aids actively extended the body’s capabilities, transforming the impairment experience into one of greater mobility and agency. They also invite a reconsideration of embodiment itself, as the use of these aids blurred the boundaries between object and subject, physicality and identity. These material, inanimate objects become animated with the body, and inseparable from it, to the point of being bound to it, whether physically or socially. By tracing how these tools facilitated movement and autonomy, this article sheds light on the evolving phenomenological experience of non-standard embodiment, challenging modern assumptions and revealing the cultural significance of disability in the medieval world.

Cet article examine l’histoire matérielle du handicap au Moyen Âge à travers l’étude de deux manuscrits des Miracles de Saint Louis datant des XIVe et XVe siècles. Il soutient que les aides à la mobilité, non seulement rendaient le handicap visible aux yeux des contemporains médiévaux et dans les archives historiques, à l’instar de la perception moderne du fauteuil roulant, mais également « augmentaient » le corps handicapé en permettant de nouvelles formes de mouvement et d’autonomie. En adoptant une approche interdisciplinaire et comparative, cette étude analyse la diversité des conceptions des aides à la mobilité et leur adaptation aux besoins spécifiques des individus en fonction de leur environnement. Loin d’être de simples objets passifs, ces aides étendaient activement les capacités du corps, transformant l’expérience du handicap en augmentant la mobilité et l’autonomie. Elles invitent également à repenser la notion d’incarnation, leur utilisation brouillant les frontières entre objet et sujet, entre physicalité et identité. Ces objets matériels et inanimés s’animent avec le corps et deviennent inséparables de celui-ci, que ce soit physiquement ou socialement. En retraçant la manière dont ces outils facilitaient le mouvement et l’autonomie, cet article éclaire l’évolution des expériences phénoménologiques des corps dits “non standards” et révèle l’importance culturelle du handicap dans le monde médiéval.
