Abstract
In November 2021, the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) announced that the Theodore Roosevelt equestrian statue would be moved from the museum’s entrance to the not yet completed Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in Medora, North Dakota. The statue depicts Roosevelt riding ahead of semi-clad walking figures of a Native American and an African man. Long the subject and site of protests, this relocation was not the museum’s first attempt to address public concerns. Activists suggested it be simply removed, but others argued that Roosevelt was a significant figure, he should not be judged by present standards, and the statue provides a chance for public education. In response to earlier protests, the AMNH created Addressing the Statue, an exhibition that explored the statue’s origins and meanings as well as alternatives to it. The exhibition was organized to create a self-contesting historical space in which the precise meaning of the past — and its commemoration — was debated and left open. This article explores the character and nature of this space. It argues that this approach failed and could not erase the politics of colonialism the statue embodied nor create a new conversation about history.

En novembre 2021, le American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) a annoncé que la statue équestre de Theodore Roosevelt serait déplacée de l’entrée du musée vers la bibliothèque présidentielle Theodore-Roosevelt à Medora, dans le Dakota du Nord, qui n’est pas encore terminée. La statue représente Roosevelt chevauchant devant les silhouettes semi-habillées d’un Amérindien et d’un Africain. Ce déplacement, qui a longtemps fait l’objet de protestations, n’était pas la première tentative du musée pour répondre aux préoccupations du public. Des activistes ont suggéré qu’elle soit simplement retirée, mais d’autres ont fait valoir que Roosevelt était un personnage important, qu’il ne devait pas être jugé selon les normes actuelles et que la statue offrait une chance d’éduquer le public. En réponse aux protestations antérieures, l’AMNH a créé Addressing the Statue, une exposition qui explore les origines et les significations de la statue, ainsi que les alternatives à celle-ci. L’exposition a été organisée de manière à créer un espace historique d’autocontestation dans lequel la signification précise du passé - et sa commémoration - a été débattue et laissée en suspens. Cet article explore le caractère et la nature de cet espace. L’auteur soutient que cette approche n’a pas réussi à effacer la politique du colonialisme que la statue incarnait, ni à créer une nouvelle conversation sur l’histoire.
