A Tocqueville For the North? André Siegfried and Canada

Abstract

This paper argues that André Siegfried’s writings on Canada played a critical role in shaping his vision of French national identity. Siegfried’s studies of Canada have long been praised for their insight, but recent scholarship has emphasized his role in promoting both anti-Americanism and an exclusionary vision of what it meant to be French during the first half of the twentieth century. For Siegfried, Canada represented a site of managed contestation between British and French culture but also an early example of the deleterious effects of Americanization. His problematic view of French Canada as essentially conservative and unchanging in the face of such challenges reinforced his conviction that France itself should remain true to “traditional” values. The exclusionary implications of his ideas were most evident when Siegfried appeared to accommodate himself to the Vichy regime, but they also persisted after the Second World War.

Résumé

C’est en écrivant ses textes sur le Canada qu’André Siegfried aurait élaboré sa vision de l’identité nationale française. Bien que l’on ait toujours apprécié la perspicacité de ses écrits, de récentes recherches ont fait ressortir que Siegfried aurait encouragé l’antiaméricanisme et défendu une vision restrictive de ce que signifiait être un Français au cours de la première moitié du XXe siècle. À ses yeux, le Canada constituait un terrain où s’affrontaient, de façon encadrée, les cultures britannique et française ; mais le Canada représentait aussi un des premiers exemples de pays victime des effets pervers de l’américanisation. Pour André Siegfried, le Canada français était une société essentiellement conservatrice et immuable, caractéristiques qui lui avaient permis de survivre au combat culturel et de résister à l’influence néfaste des États-Unis. Ce raisonnement problématique le convainquit que la France devait elle-même rester fidèle à ses valeurs « traditionnelles ». On vit clairement où pouvaient mener de telles idées, qui continuèrent d’ailleurs d’avoir cours après la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, lorsqu’André Siegfried sembla s’accommoder du gouvernement de Vichy.
