“Literary Memorials”: The Great War Regimental Histories, 1919-1939

Abstract

While the Canadian Corps earned a reputation as one of the finest fighting formations on the Western Front during the First World War, and had an efficient publicity machine under the guiding hand of Lord Beaverbrook to propagate their deeds, the Canadian government was slow to codify this reputation in postwar historical texts. The Official History was delayed for nearly two decades and veterans were bitterly disappointed in being denied a comprehensive account of their battles. As a result, regiments took it upon themselves to craft their own histories. Although now largely ignored by historians, this genre of historical writing documented the actions of the unit during the war and served as a tool to commemorate fallen comrades. The regimental histories are important texts within the canon of Canadian military historiography, offering matchless insight into the events and social history of the Great War, as well as into the post-war efforts of combatants and their families to find meaning for this cataclysmic event.

Résumé

Durant la Première Guerre mondiale, le Corps d'armée canadien acquit la réputation d’être l’une des meilleures troupes de combat du front occidental et ses exploits furent largement diffusés par l'efficace machine publicitaire de Lord Beaverbrook. Le gouvernement canadien se montra cependant peu empressé à immortaliser cette gloire dans des écrits historiques ; on mit en fait vingt ans avant de lancer le projet de rédaction d'une histoire officielle. Les anciens combattants furent amèrement déçus de voir que l'on tardait tant à faire le récit détaillé de leurs batailles. Face à cette inaction, les régiments décidèrent d'agir et d'établir eux-mêmes leur propre histoire. Bien des historiens dédaignent aujourd' hui ce genre de textes historiques, qui ont pourtant eu leur utilité puisqu'ils relataient les opérations de l’unité pendant la guerre et rendaient ainsi hommage aux frères d'armes tombés au combat. Les histoires régimentaires ont leur importance dans l’historiographie militaire canadienne ; elles offrent un aperçu unique sur les événements et sur I’histoire sociale de la Grande Guerre, et témoignent des efforts que déployèrent, après la guerre, les soldats et leurs familles pour trouver un sens au terrible drame qu'ils venaient de vivre.
