Abstract
Numerous surviving SMEs remain little, in consequence of their market potentialities, or because their managers do not want them to grow, in general because they want to keep control of their firm. Some of them, the « gazelles », grow more quickly than the others. Their contribution to the growth of economy and job creation is regarded as a priority in most of OCDE’s countries. Yet, the desire of growth in the SME remains difficult to be financially assumed in the long run.
In this research, we show that it is very hard to comprehend the SME’s financial problematic irrespective of the manager’s or the management team’s characteristics. These characteristics have a fundamental influence on the intention of growth, regarded as a prerequisite to reach and support a fast path of development. Each manager corresponds to “a form“ of intention of growth and a personalization of the main financial decisions.
Our comments are supported by a review of the literature on the requirements of the hyper-growth phenomenon and the role, in this specific context, of the managers’ characteristics on the intention of growth and financial decisions. We illustrate our discussions with two case studies in the situation of hyper-growth.
